Golfing Safaris in South Africa

Rovos Rail Golfing Safari

Rovos Rail has designed a delightful nine-day Golf Safari to entertain the most discerning player that also includes optional excursions for non-playing guests.

This golf safari commences in Pretoria and travels east towards the spectacular Drakensberg escarpment en route to Nelspruit. Play at Leopard's Creek or enjoy a game drive in the world famous Kruger Park followed by shopping and lunch at Casterbridge near White River.

Tee off at the Royal Swazi Golf Club, near Manzini in Swaziland, while non-golfers visit the Mlilwane Game Reserve, Houses of Parliament and the Swazi Candle Factory. Then it's on to Zululand for game viewing in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the St. Lucia Estuary.

Play one of South Africa's finest courses, the Durban Beechwood Country Club, while non-playing guests enjoy a city tour of Durban followed by lunch at the Golf Club. In the foothills of the imposing Drakensberg Mountains 18-holes await at the Champagne Sports Resort, with a guided tour of the Battlefields a further highlight for non-golfers.

Relax as the train travels north towards the magnificent resort of Sun City in the Pilanesberg Mountains. A full day is spent at this world-famous facility before departing for Pretoria where this memorable journey ends.


DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Drakensberg Escarpment
Departing from Rovos Rail's private station, Capital Park in Pretoria this morning, lunch is served as the Pride of Africa winds its way towards the spectacular Drakensberg escarpment en route to Nelspruit. You will arrive in Waterval Onder at about 18h30, and enjoy a leisurely dinner.

Day 2: Leopard Creek, Kruger National ParkAt 10h00, you will tee off at Leopard Creek in Malelane and enjoy 18 holes of golf. Non-golfers can enjoy a game drive in the world famous Kruger Park, followed by shopping and lunch at Casterbridge near White River. At 18h00, your train departs for Swaziland.

Day 3: Royal Swazi Golf Club, Swaziland
Tee-off bright and early (08h30) at the Royal Swazi Golf Club near Manzini while your non-golfing partners visit Mlilwane Game Reserve, The Houses of Parliament and the Swazi Candle factory. The Royal Swazi Sun golf course, an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, is internationally renowned for its scenic setting and natural beauty. Afterwards, the train will depart overnight for Hluhluwe, for the following days’ game viewing.

Day 4: Hluhluwe Game Reserve
Today is yours to spend at leisure. Take a break from the golfing, and prepare to rise very early (06h00) for a game drive in Hluhluwe to view game in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the St. Lucia Estuary. Later on in the afternoon (14h30), you will be taken on a cruise on St Lucia Lake.

Day 5: Durban County Club Beachwood Course, Durban
This morning’s tee-off is at 08h30 at Durban Country Club Beachwood Course, a challenging course comprising long fairways also ranked as one of the best in South Africa. Non-golfers will partake in a Durban City Tour followed by lunch at the Durban Beachwood Golf Club.

Day 6: Champagne Sports Resort
Enjoy 18 holes of fantastic golf at the Champagne Sports Resort (07h30), nestled in the foothills of the imposing Drakensberg Mountains. Non-golfers will have the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the Battlefields near Ladysmith - one of the many highlights of this trip. Otherwise they can shop, take a gentle stroll at Champagne Castle, later joining the golfers for lunch.

Day 7: Ladysmith
At 07h00, the train departs for Ladysmith. Spend today at leisure, relaxing on the luxurious train as it travels north towards the magnificent resort of Sun City in the Pilanesberg Mountains.

Day 8: Gary Player Country Club, Sun City
Tee-off at Gary Player Country Club (08h00), Sun City and enjoy a fine lunch at the Club. Later in the afternoon, about 15h30, you will go on a game drive in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Non-golfers will spend the day exploring the vibrant, exciting Sun City, meeting the golfers for lunch at the Gary Player Country Club and later, joining them on the evening game drive in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve with a view to spotting some of Africa’s big game.

Day 9: Pretoria
Your tour comes to an end today. You’ll depart Rustenburg at 07h00 and arrive at Capital Park Station, Pretoria at 10h00.

CAPE TOWN / GARDEN ROUTE – 14 Day

Day 1
Morning: Arrive on the morning flight at Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) and fly domestic to Port Elizabeth (PE). Meet up with you and take you to Bushman Sands Hotel & Game Reserve, where you will spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2
T-off after breakfast at the Bushman Sands Golf Club. The 18-hole championship course has been designed by South African golfing legend, Gary Player. The course follows the banks of the Bushman’s and New Years Rivers, resembling the game's earliest "links" courses in Scotland with undulating fairways and pot bunkers.

Unique features include playing the first stroke over the active railway line, a double green (1600 sq.m) shared by the 2nd and 5th holes, crossing the Bushman’s River and New Year’s River on various holes and finishing with a final drive over a small cemetery in the centre of the fairway.

This is a challenging, yet friendly course, to be enjoyed by all golfers. Facilities include a halfway house, pro-shop and gents and ladies locker rooms each with showers and a steam room.

Non-golfers have the option to go on a game drive, visit the Spa or indulge in the many activities hosted.

Day 3

Day 4
We drive along the coast toward Knysna. En route, we visit the beautiful Tsitsikama Forest; walk through the rain forest and onto the hang bridge over the Storms River.

En route to our destination, we also stop at Blue Crane Bridge, where we will witness adrenalin seekers, jumping the highest bungee in the world – 216 meters. You can join in – if you are brave enough!

Day 5
We T-off on a Platinum course today; Pezula Golf Course at Knysna, while the non-golfers visit Monkey Land and Teniqua Wildlife Rehab Centre. http://www.monkeyland.co.za

Day 6
Play golf at the Links Golf course at Fancourt. After lunch, we visit the beautiful street shops in Knysna, as well as the Oyster farm where we can taste this natural aphrodisiac!

Day 7

Day 8
Morning: We play another golf game at Fancourt – on the Montagu or Outeniqua course. Non-golfers visit the fascinating transport museum at George. After lunch, we depart for Oudtshoorn (world’s feather capital), where we will overnight.

Day 9

Day 10
We undertake a 4 hour drive to Cape Town after breakfast. Optionally, you can fly to Cape Town. In Cape Town we will visit Table Mountain, weather permitting We will also explore Cape Town with the “Cape Town Explorer” open-air bus and enjoy a shopping excursion at the V&A Waterfront.

Day 11
T-off at Erinvale Golf Club after breakfast, while non-golfers can enjoy the morning on the beach. We spend the afternoon exploring the Cape’s top wine areas at Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where we will conduct a wine cellar tour and tasting.

Day 12
Today we will play golf at the beautiful Steenberg Golf Club, while the non-golfers will pay a visit to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point and then we are off to Simonstown to visit the penguin family.

Day 13
We follow arguably, the most scenic route in the Cape this morning to Hermanus, the “Whale Capital” of SA. Afternoon golf game at this platinum course – the Arabella Golf Course. While the golfers enjoy themselves on the course, the non-golfers will go whale watching in Hermanus, looking at the giants of the deep.

Day 14
Our last day see us visiting the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere (the Canal Walk), before departing to Cape Town International for your forward flight home.

KWAZULU NATAL – 11 Day

Day 1
Arrive at Durban International Airport where your guide will meet up with you. Drive 2h30 minutes to book in at our hotel, the Champagne Sports Resort. We spend the remainder of the day recuperating.

Day 2
T-off after breakfast on this beautiful, 18 hole competition status, golf course. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Non-golfers have the opportunity to partake in the many activities available here.

Day 3
We check out after breakfast and follow the “Battle Route” featuring many battles between Boer/Brit, as well as Zulu/Brit. We first visit the Battle of Isandhlwana – battle between the Zulus and the British Forces. We also pay a visit to Rourke’s Drift where the most Victorian Crosses for bravery were awarded than any other British battle.

Reaching the KZN North Coast by late afternoon, we will book into a Game Lodge, where a traditional barbeque (braai in Afrikaans) will be served in the boma.

Day 4
After an early morning walk and breakfast, we enjoy a game drive through Phinda Game Reserve, where we will spend the whole day looking for the “Big Five”, giraffe, blue wildebeest, zebra, birds and other numerous other wildlife.

Day 5
After an early morning breakfast, we set off on a boat trip to the St Lucia wetlands, which is a World Heritage site with 5 eco systems. We then drive to Prince’s Grant Country Club for an afternoon golf game and then book into our accommodation in Ballito for 2 nights. Non-golfers will visit the Natal Sharks Board for an educational excursion.

Day 6
Early morning golf game at Zimbali Golf Course arranged for today. Non-golfers will visit Ushaka Marine World http://www.ushakamarineworld.co.za A visit to The Pro shop at one of the largest shopping centres in Natal can also be arranged.

Day 7
T-off at the Wild Coast Sun golf range. The afternoon is spent at leisure at the Wild Coast Sun. We overnight in the Mondazur.

Day 8
Tee-off at San Lameer Golf Club, while the non-golfers spend the day in the beautiful Oribi Gorge with its many activities. http://www.oribigorge.co.za

Day 9
Another golf game is conducted at the Southbroom Golf Club today and the non-golfers can visit the beautiful town of Shelly Beach, where a large shopping complex on the South Coast is found.

We drive to Pennington and book in the Selborne Hotel, Spa & Golf Estate for 2 nights. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 10
Morning golf game at Selbourne Golf Course and the rest of the day spent at leisure.

Day 11
Our last day see us playing San Lameer Golf Course again before departing to Durban International for your forward flight to JIA.

LOWVELD GOLF TOUR (SUN CITY TO KRUGER PARK) – 12 Day

Day 1
Arrival at Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) on the morning flight. Depending on the arrival time, we will be introduced to the South African history and culture –visit the Voortrekker Museum, Union Buildings and Church Square in Pretoria.

Day 2
T-off is arranged at Centurion Country Club for its magnificent 18 holes with its four eco-systems. Non-golfers will visit Lesedi Cultural Village, learning more about the black cultures in South Africa.

We will visit a curio and jewellery shop before being transferred to our hotel in Sun City for 2 nights. A short orientation tour will be conducted at Sun City and then book into our accommodation. Dinner will be served at the hotel and the rest of the evening for gambling or at leisure.

Day 3
Early morning game-drive at the adjacent Pilanesberg National Park. This 55,000 ha game reserve boasts the Big 5 animals and is located inside a massive 2 million year old crater.

We will enjoy brunch back at the hotel and then T-off at Gary Player Golf course and spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Non-golfers can explore the many activities hosted by Sun City, or spend the afternoon at the man-made “Valley of Waves”, worshipping the sun.

Day 4
Early morning breakfast will be followed by golf played at the Lost City course with its 38 crocodiles at the thirteenth hole, just waiting for you to make a slip-up!

After lunch we will drive back to Pretoria and visit Hartebeespoortdam craft market.

Day 5
Depart after breakfast to JIA and fly to Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province. We will visit the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God's Window.

Day 6
T-off on a beautiful golf course (Hans Merensky), where you might encounter an elephant or giraffe – even watch golf balls been stolen by monkeys! Go for a sunset cruise on the dam, enjoying a great sundown drink as we watch the sun disappearing over the African savannah plains.

Day 7

Day 8
After an early morning game drive, we T-off at Kruger Park Lodge Golf Course. Non-golfers will visit a fascinating shopping centre, with extra-ordinary souvenirs.

At 17h00 we will embark on a night drive in the Kruger Park and have the opportunity to see the Kruger's nocturnal animals in action.

Day 9
After an early morning game drive, we play another golf game at Sabie River Sun Golf Course. Non-golfers have the opportunity to engage in the many activities hosted in the area - horse riding, quad bikes, tree top tours, etc.

Day 10
We depart for Malelane Gate as we drive through the Kruger Park and hopefully catch some of those illusive Big 5 animals (Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion, and Leopard) and other game. We book into the Malelane Sun Hotel.

Day 11
Early morning golf game at the world renowned Leopard Creek. Non-golfers spend the morning at leisure, maybe sitting and watch the waterhole – looking at animals come and goes. We depart for Pretoria after our golf game and book into Lombardi Estate Hotel.

Day 12
T-off at Silver Lakes Golf Course and the non-golfers will visit one of the biggest shopping complexes in South Africa this morning for some last minute shopping before departing to the airport for you flight back home.

After an early morning game drive and breakfast, we book out and set off on a boat trip to the St Lucia wetlands, which is a World Heritage site with 5 eco systems.
Afternoon: We drive to Ballito and book into Zimbali Lodge for 2 nights.

Day 11
T-off at Zimbali Golf Club while the non-golfers will be conducting a fascinating City tour of Durban. After our golf game and lunch, we drive to the South Coast and book into our hotel. The evening is spent at leisure, or you can engage in the many activities presented here at this beautiful paradise.

Day 12
Early morning T-off at the Wild Coast Sun Golf Course. Non-golfers will spend the whole day at the Wild Cost Sun and engage in the variety of activities here. After our golf game and lunch, we spend the rest of the day and evening at the Wild Coast Sun.

Day 13
Our last day in KwaZulu Natal see us playing Selborne Golf Course, before departing to Durban International for your forward flight to JIA. Fly domestic to George Airport where your guide will meet up with you and book you into your hotel.

Day 14
After breakfast, we depart for Oudtshoorn (world’s feather capital), where we will visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch, an ostrich farm and the Cango caves.

Day 15

Day 18
Today we will play golf at the beautiful Steenberg Golf Club. Non-golfers will pay a visit to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point and then we are off to Simonstown to visit the penguin family.

After the golf game we drive around Sea Point to Llandudno and visit Hout Bay for a sea 45 minute sea cruise to Duiker island (cape seals).

Day 19
We follow arguably, the most scenic route in the Cape, to Hermanus, the “Whale Capital” of SA. While the golfers enjoy themselves on the course, the non-golfers will go whale watching in Hermanus, looking at the giants of the deep. Spend the rest of the day spent at leisure.

Day 20
Our last golfing day see us playing Arabella Golf Course again before departing to Cape Town International for your forward flight to JIA. The non-golfers will pay one final visit to a nearby wine farm for some wine tasting and maybe buy a few bottles for home!

Day 21
Morning: Our last day will be spent in the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere – the “Canal Walk”, before departing to Cape Town International for your forward flight to JIA.
